A tasty and nutritious school lunch is a recipe for success for our students!
Gwinnett County Public Schools’ award-winning school nutrition program (SNP) provides tasty, nutritious meals to students at an economical price. Café Gwinnett plays a critical role in ensuring students have access to nutritious meals. Based on strict federal guidelines, every school lunch served in our cafeterias contains fruits and vegetables, whole-grains, lean protein, and low-fat dairy to help feed students’ bodies and fuel their minds.
“School lunches are healthier than ever, with more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and less fat and sodium,” says Ken Yant, GCPS’ director of School Nutrition. “National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the benefits of our lunch program, and the appealing choices we offer.”
Gwinnett cafeterias serve many of the brands families use at home, such as Tyson, General Mills, Kellogg’s, and Land O’ Lakes. In addition, students are served a variety of fruits and vegetables, many locally grown, through GCPS’ Farm to School program. More than a third of our schools have grant-funded student salad bars, and the district boasts 143 edible gardens at our schools.
In October, take a moment to thank GCPS’ 1,400 food service professionals for their dedicated work in providing lunches (and breakfast) in 132 school cafeterias!
