It’s American Education Week (AEW)! For 2017, this celebration of public education focuses on “Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility.”
In Gwinnett County Public Schools, we believe that public education is an integral part of the seamless fabric of the American experience. Our public schools are the cornerstones of the community, the place where all children are provided with a quality and effective education that will prepare them for success in life and for the responsibilities of American citizenship.
We believe in the power of public education to change lives, set trajectories for the stars, and clear the way for innovation and big thinking. We, as a community, have shown a commitment to public schools and recognize the value of public education. Public education is the great equalizer, ensuring that all students have a shot at success. Our schools help to level the playing field, providing a launching pad for success as our students prepare for college and careers as well as the responsibilities of being contributing members of society and engaged citizens.
Throughout the week, we’ll be celebrating a number of the partners who help our teachers ensure that students fulfill their promise. During this week-long celebration, we celebrate Educational Support Professionals Day (Nov. 15), National Parental Involvement Day (Nov. 16), and Substitute Educators Day (Nov. 17).
Each GCPS staff member plays an important role in providing a world-class education for all children in our schools. We have some of the finest educators in the profession and our teachers and school leaders are at the heart of a Gwinnett education. Their professionalism, commitment, and expertise ensure that the K-12 experience in Gwinnett sets our students on the path to a successful future. However, they can’t do it alone. It takes all of us… in the classroom and the office, in the lab and the media center, in the halls and the cafeteria, and on the bus and the playing fields…to support students and their learning. We salute GCPS employees for their work to unharness the promise in the lives of our students! Our partners at home and in the community are important members of the team as well. Together, we— all of us— embrace the responsibility we share, safeguarding and fulfilling each child’s right to a great public school education.
