Gwinnett’s pool of substitute educators ensures that our schools can continue a productive day of learning for our students, even when their regular classroom teacher is away from school. Following the regular teacher’s direction, substitutes ensure that students keep learning in their teacher’s absence. Substitutes may step in on short notice after a last-minute call, or they may take over a classroom for weeks or months when a teacher is ill or on leave.
In Gwinnett, some substitute educators are on permanent staff at the school, familiar to the children and part of the education team. These Stellar Subs are ready to fill in where they are needed. Oftentimes, one-time educators, many now retired, stay just as busy as substitutes, bringing their experience and expertise to the classroom wherever and whenever they are needed. We appreciate the important work of substitute teachers!
Interesting in being a GCPS substitute teacher?
GCPS is seeking qualified substitutes for the 2017-18 school year. Serving as a substitute is a great way to make connections for future, full-time employment and to gain experience in a variety of educational settings. Subs can determine the days and hours they’ll be available for assignments as well as the locations where they’re interested in serving. Substitute teaching can be an especially good fit for someone who is working toward a teaching certificate.
Some important things to know…
- Substitute teachers do not have to be certified to teach. However, they must have completed a minimum of 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours from a college approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.
- Candidates must complete the GCPS Substitute Teacher Training Program (if they do not possess a valid or expired professional teaching certificate).
- Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis throughout the school year.
- Substitute teacher orientation sessions are conducted weekly at the J. Alvin Wilbanks Instructional Support Center in Suwanee.
- Pay rates for substitute teachers have increased for the 2017–18 school year to $89 per day for regular substitute teaching and $99 per day for long-term substitute teaching.
The district also employs substitutes for other important roles, including paraprofessionals, clerical staff, clinic workers, and custodians.
