When GCPS bus driver Emma McGowan speeds she actually earns medals rather than speeding tickets. She’s a world-caliber runner competing for the United States on the Masters circuit. (Participants are 35 or older and compete in their age group.)
Last month, Ms. McGowan competed in the biennial World Masters Athletics Track and Field Championships in Malaga, Spain. She says her 5th-place finish in the 100-meters event was disappointing, but she came back to take a silver in the 200m, and, saving the best for last, won the gold medal and set an American record in the 400m! This very speedy driver also medaled in the Masters World Championships in Lyon, France in 2015— taking gold in 100m and 4x100 and silver in the 200m, 400m, and 4x4— and the 2016 championships in Perth, Australia, returning home with a gold medal in both the 100m and 200m.
“I’m a competitive person in sports and as long as I can keep running with no major injuries I’ll keep going,” says Ms. McGowan. “Being in the top three in the World in my new age group, Women 50, it’s going to push me even more to be the best.”
