Community leaders for American Education Week
Last month, American Education Week brought 141 members of Gwinnett’s business community into local schools to serve as “Principal for a Day” and, in one case, “Superintendent for a Day.” The annual event, co-sponsored by the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and Gwinnett County Public Schools, puts community leaders into the principal’s shoes for a school day. Participants had opportunities to meet with students and staff, observe lessons, and participate in classroom activities. Watch this GCPS TV video to learn more about the 2018 Principal for a Day event. Look for a list of participants and photos online.
Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is the presenting sponsor for a luncheon for participants on with Eastside Medical Center, Peach State Federal Credit Union, and Georgia Campus–Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine serving as leading sponsors and Leadership Gwinnett as a table sponsor. Principals and community members first connected at a breakfast event in October.
“It was so nice to share the important work we do daily with the community. We were able to build plans for future partnerships.”
“I was so impressed with how much my PFAD wanted to learn about our schools.”
“I enjoyed having a Principal for a Day that is from our community. It was a great opportunity not only to share information about our school, but also to build a relationship moving forward.”

“The experience was very enlightening and spending time in the school opened my eyes to both the great work and issues the educators and staff experience first- hand.”
“I really don’t know how it could have been better unless they extended it to ‘Principal for Two Days’ or ‘Principal for a Week’.”
“What a special privilege to spend the day with these dedicated and effective educators.”
