This summer, GCPS’ Media Services team partnered with the Atlanta Community Food Bank and One 2 One to feed both the minds and the bodies of schoolchildren in the Meadowcreek and Norcross clusters. In this Focus Moment from GCPS TV, learn how the district’s two book mobiles— Explore and Pow— were used to check out 13,500 books and deliver some 2,600 pounds of snacks and once-a-week meals to young readers during June and July.
“The excitement from students and their parents was incredible,” says Jennifer Brown, a media specialist who supported the mobile libraries during the summer. “Students loved browsing the shelves to pick what they wanted to read, and the Book Mobile offered thousands of books!” Ms. Brown recalls one student who was reluctant to travel with his family to the beach because he would miss checking out books that week.
Be on the lookout for the colorful converted buses during the school year as they travel the county to promote literacy initiatives through our “Book the Bus” program. For these visits, the book mobiles will be stocked with new books— purchased with donations or provided by sponsors, helping children build their own personal libraries.
