Nominate an outstanding teacher or school leader today for the 2019 Atlanta Families' Awards for Excellence in Education! The deadline to nominate is Sept. 28.
The Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence in Education aims to elevate the quality of public education by identifying excellent educators and empowering them to expand their impact. Outstanding teachers, assistant principals, and principals from five Metro Atlanta school districts— Gwinnett County Public Schools as well as Atlanta Public Schools, Cobb County Schools, DeKalb County Schools, Fulton County Schools— are eligible to be nominated. Educators must have demonstrated excellence in three areas—growth in student achievement, a positive impact on students’ self-esteem, and effective collaboration within their school communities.
The multi-round process includes a video submission, an essay, a classroom observation, and a final interview during which finalists present a proposal for the project they’d like to fund with their winnings. Winners will be notified in the spring.
Each award winner receives funding for a school project, funding for professional development, and a personal stipend.
Since 2015 when the awards program was opened to include GCPS, a number of Gwinnett educators and school leaders have joined the AFAEE Winner’s Circle, including:
2018: Jennifer Blodgett of Patrick ES, and Amber Simmons of Brookwood HS
2017: Sherry Aglietti of Bay Creek MS, and Soo Son of Suwanee ES
2016: Tisha Williamson of Starling ES, Alicia McHardy of Norcross HS, and Principal Karen Lillard of Beaver Ridge ES
2015: Cindy Apley-Rose of Couch MS, Assistant Principal Jennifer Dunn of Partee ES, and Kara Cowdrick of Chesney ES
