Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of “The Beloved Community” in which neighbors work together to solve social problems, build bridges, remove barriers, and be of service to one another. That vision is celebrated in a national day of service on the federal observance of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., designated by Congress in 1994.
You can find service opportunities for MLK Day— observed on Jan. 21 this year—through the Corporation for National and Community Service and United Way . You also can develop your own project with family, friends, and neighbors. (If you or your organization has a volunteer project and you’d like to find volunteers, make sure to register your project.)
MLK Day is a great opportunity for your family to spend time together helping the community. Check out this tipsheet with ideas for family-friendly community service throughout the year and ways to encourage your teen to volunteer.
