The holidays and one of the biggest shopping seasons of the year are fast approaching. Unfortunately, cybercriminals are anticipating the coming holiday season as well… and they’re ready. Follow these tips for stress-free and cyber-savvy shopping online:
Don’t click links or open attachments in emails. Many “unbelievable” deals are really scams. A good practice is to close the email and go directly to the retailer’s website to verify the deal.
Create unique usernames and passwords. Do not use the same password for multiple accounts. Instead, create strong, unique passwords or a hard-to-guess passphrase (a string of meaningful but unrelated words).
Set up multi-factor authentication whenever possible. With multi-factor authentication, a stolen password is now less of a liability because the cybercriminal doesn’t have all factors needed to access your account or information.
Don’t shop on public Wi-Fi. If you want to shop on your mobile device, be sure to use mobile data or VPN.
Monitor your bank account. A lot of theft and fraudulent orders go unnoticed.
