At a Feb. 7 event, district and community leaders celebrated Gwinnett County’s brightest students, culminated with the naming of a student-staff duo from Brookwood HS as Gwinnett County’s STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) Student and Teacher.
Hollis Zeng earned the title of Gwinnett County 2020 STAR Student, representing the county’s public and private schools. As part of the recognition, each STAR student selects a teacher as the educator who has had a strong influence on his or her academic career. The Brookwood senior selected Craig Witmer, who teaches Advanced Placement Economics, as his STAR Teacher.
Each STAR student is the senior in the top 10% of his or her class with the highest SAT score. Hollis earned the county title by having the highest SAT score among the countywide Class of 2020.
As the 2020 Gwinnett County STAR Student and Teacher, Hollis and Mr. Witmer, move on to regional competition. Students and teachers representing Buford City Schools also compete at the regional level. The region winner will advance to the statewide contest. Georgia’s 2020 STAR Student and teacher will be named later this spring.
