The nation’s five military service academies have offered appointments to 19 GCPS seniors. These soon-to-be graduates, representing nine high schools, received academy appointments from the Air Force, Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine military service academies.
In addition to the prestige of attending the academies, the students earned more than $7.5 million in scholarship money. Brookwood and Peachtree Ridge high schools had the most appointments with four each, followed by Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology and Mill Creek High School, which both had three students.
The U.S. service academies are postsecondary institutions that combine educational excellence with military officer training. Students accepted to the academies receive a free, four-year education in return for a commitment to serve in the active-duty military after graduation. In order to be admitted, students must receive a congressional nomination from either their U.S. representative or senator and must meet the highly competitive educational and extracurricular standards that are set by the individual academies as well as standards for physical aptitude and medical fitness.
