Michele Bourdonnay couldn’t hide the shock on her face when she opened her front door to a socially distanced “crowd” with some exciting news.
Recently, members of Gwinnett County Public Schools’ Transportation Department and representatives of the Rotary Club of Gwinnett County gathered on Ms. Bourdonnay’s doorstep to surprise her with the Rotary Club’s 2020 Hidden Hero Award.
The award recognizes bus drivers who “go above and beyond the call of duty and demonstrate ‘Service Above Self’ in the course of their responsibilities.” Transportation supervisors were asked to consider bus drivers who inspire others, address the needs of the whole child, and show commitment to their students and community.
Ms. Bourdonnay was selected from among three finalists for the award. Supervisor Darlene Cortiss-McGonagle nominated Ms. Bourdonnay for her dedication to the children she transports to Archer HS, Dacula MS, and Alcova and Harbins elementary schools each day, as well as her community outreach with Atlanta Dream Center. She has transported students with special needs since 2018. During the pandemic, she has dedicated her time to the community by distributing meals in Atlanta, and delivering meals to GCPS students last spring.
“Michele exhibits dedication and passion toward others, whether it is through the Dream Center, or with her fellow employees and the students she transports,” said Ms. Cortiss-McGonagle. “Her service is extremely admirable.”
Before joining GCPS, Ms. Bourdonnay was an elementary teacher in Abu Dhabi for seven years. Upon returning to the U.S., she accepted the position driving for GCPS while waiting for her Georgia teaching license. When Ms. Bourdonnay received notification that she could teach again, she decided to continue driving instead.
“My heart is with the special needs students that I transport,” she said.
After regaining her composure during the surprise visit, Ms. Bourdonnay accepted balloons, flowers, a plaque, and a $500 cash prize from Rotary Club representatives Mike Fulton and Terry Swaim.
