Congratulations to Cindy Huynh! The Brookwood HS senior was named Gwinnett County Public Schools’ 2021 STAR Student and one of four county-level STAR honorees in the annual Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program. As part of the recognition, each STAR student selects a teacher who has had a strong influence on his or her academic career. Cindy selected David Dimsdale, who taught her for two years in AP Calculus and AP Statistics, as her STAR Teacher.
The STAR student honor, which is open to public and private school students, is bestowed on the senior in the top 10% of his or her class with the highest SAT score at each Georgia high school. A total of 33 seniors in the county’s public and private schools were considered for the county-level honor. Cindy tied for the county honor with three students—Monroe Harless, James Morgan, and Vachan Patel—from Buford HS (Buford City Schools). The county’s four STAR winners will move on to compete for the regional title. Regional winners advance to the state level to compete for the honor of being named Georgia’s 2021 STAR Student and Teacher.
Upon learning that she was Gwinnett County’s STAR Student in a surprise announcement at her school, Cindy was overwhelmed and grateful. She says she chose Mr. Dimsdale as her STAR Teacher based on all that he does for students, explaining, “Mr. Dimsdale’s passion for teaching and his energy inspired me. When we switched to digital last spring, he was always there to answer our questions.”
Mr. Dimsdale was humbled to be recognized and added that Brookwood’s STAR Student is a special student and person. “There are three things that really set Cindy apart from other students,” her says. “First, she is very kind. She also is very conscientious as a student. She always is prepared and comes to class ready to learn. Finally, she is an active learner and participant in class, asking good questions. I am honored that she selected me as her STAR teacher as she really was my top student for two years.”
