Ride the wave of learning with the Summer Enrichment + Acceleration (SEA) program!
This summer’s K-8 learning experience—set for June 14 to July 2—has been redesigned with the goal of helping all students, while specifically addressing learning losses that have occurred over the past year-and-a-half during the pandemic. The focus on enrichment and acceleration is intended to help students get a head start on next year’s learning.
SEA activities will focus on accelerating and expanding on student learning for the current grade and previewing what students will learn at the next grade level. In addition to the acceleration, students also will participate in enrichment opportunities outside the core subject areas, taking part in engaging activities and learning typically offered in Specials and Connections courses.
There are four key SEA opportunities:
In-Person SEA Program—Designed for students who teachers and schools feel would most benefit from in-person instruction. These free, in-person classes are available by invitation. (June 14-July 2)
Rising K Academy—Open to all children registered to start kindergarten in the fall at a GCPS school. This program is available at no charge to families. (June 14-July 2)
Digital SEA Program—Open to all GCPS students. This self-paced digital format is accessed through the Student Portal on the Summer Enrichment and Acceleration eCLASS page. (June 14-July 16)
Career and Technical Education (CTE) Enrichment Camps—Offered for interested students in grades 8-12. Duluth HS will host four week-long enrichment camps where participants will earn an industry-recognized certification. These camps are free.
o ServSafe Manager Certification—For rising 11th and 12th graders. Participants will learn about safely handling food in this training. ServSafe certification is a requirement for professionals in the service and hospitality industry. (June 14-18, 8-11 a.m.)
o OSHA 10 Certification—For students ages 16 and older. Safety first! OSHA 10 certification is industry-recognized and prepares a potential employee to follow basic safety precautions on a worksite. (June 7-10, 8-11 a.m., or June 21-24, 8-11 a.m.)
o American Heart Association Basic Life Support (CPR)—For rising 9th-12th graders. Being prepared for an emergency is a valuable life skill, and one of the best ways to be prepared is to be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). CPR also is a great initial certification for students considering a future career in healthcare. (June 21-24, 9-11 a.m.)
Students participating in the in-person SEA Program and the Rising K Academy will attend the program from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the three-week session (June 14-July 2). Class sizes will be small and health and safety practices like masks and physical distancing will remain in effect during this summer learning time. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all in-person participants at no charge.
Students participating in the self-paced digital SEA program will be able to access online lessons and activities for summer enrichment by logging into the MyeCLASS student portal.
Schools will be sharing more information about the Summer Enrichment + Acceleration program with students and their families in the coming weeks! If you have questions, please send email to SEA@gcpsk12.org.
