In June, more than 32,000 GCPS students took advantage of free, in-person learning opportunities to bridge gaps in their school experience, extend their learning, and prepare for the new school year. Gwinnett’s Summer Enrichment + Acceleration (SEA) Academy focused on accelerating and expanding on learning for the current grade, previewing what students will learn at the next grade level, and providing engaging activities typically offered in Specials and Connections courses. Rising K Academy served as a preview and preparation for kindergarten for our youngest students. (All K-8 students had access to self-paced digital classes through the Student Portal as part of the Digital SEA Program.) And, high school students made up classes previously failed by participating in free summer classes.
Each week between June 1 and July 24, our Book Mobiles made 100 stops in six clusters, checking out school library books to students who may not have easy access to the public library. The Pow and Explore book mobiles are staffed by volunteers from our media centers. This summer, 8,250 students visited these two traveling libraries and checked out nearly 11,000 books! Thanks to partnerships with Atlanta Community Food Bank and GCPS’ School Nutrition Program, visitors to the book mobiles also received snacks and students on some routes received meals.
Congratulations to the nearly 600 GCPS seniors who completed requirements to graduate this summer! A Summer Graduation Ceremony was held July 8 at Gas South Center (formerly Infinite Energy Center) for participating graduates from schools across the district.
