In Gwinnett County Public Schools, we believe in the Power of One… one caring adult can change a child’s life. With the support of community members and GCPS employees, the district’s Community-Based Mentoring Program is building on the Power of One to connect caring adults in the community with students. Mentors provide our students guidance, encouragement, and support to help them become successful young adults, both in and out school. The district is seeking both male and female mentors for the 2021-22 year. Prospective mentors can learn more about how to become a mentor and find an application online. Training is provided. The district matches mentors who have completed all steps in the application process with student mentees, and provides ongoing support and resources for a successful mentoring experience.
GCPS’ mentoring program has four priorities, serving students through individual and small-group mentoring:
African American Boys Priority—James Rayford, director
African American Girls Priority—Nicole Tomlinson, director
Latino/Hispanic Priority (recently divided to serve boys and girls separately)—Nury Crawford, director for girls, and O.J. Soto, director for boys
Become a Mentor!
The district is seeking both men and women to serve as mentors. In fact, many GCPS staff members have stepped up to fill this important role for a student. Prospective mentors, who must be 21 or older, must follow these steps:
Complete a mentor application.
Attend a Volunteer Mentor Training Session (currently online).
Undergo fingerprinting and a background check.
