At its regular meeting on June 16, 2022, the Gwinnett County Board of Education adopted the fiscal year 2023 budget Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) in the total expenditure amount of $2,828,048,419 as presented by Superintendent Dr. Calvin J. Watts and tentatively adopted by the board on April 14. As required by law, the budget was advertised in the local newspaper, and two hearings to solicit public input were held—one on May 19 and one on June 16. More information about the budget is available on the GCPS website.
As part of the budget process, the Board of Education also is required to tentatively adopt a millage rate to support the budget. The total millage rate is made up of two parts. The Maintenance and Operations (M&O) millage rate funds day-to-day operations of the school district while the debt-service millage is used to pay down the School Board’s long-term debt from bond referenda passed over the years to pay for school construction.
At the same meeting, in a unanimous vote of 5-0, the Board of Education tentatively adopted a millage rate of 19.20 mills for Maintenance and Operations and 1.45 mills for Debt Service to support the FY2023 budget. The proposed combined millage rate of 20.65 mills is a decrease of .70 mills compared to the current millage of 21.35. The millage rate is used to calculate the property tax paid by Gwinnett property owners. As proposed, the millage rate for schools taxes would be calculated at a rate of $20.65 per $1,000 of taxable assessed value for a house or business.
Public hearings on the millage rate will be scheduled for July.
A final adopted budget will be posted to the GCPS website once the millage rate is approved.
