There are superheroes like MARVEL’s Avengers who have epic showdowns with archenemies. And then there are the School Lunch Heroes in our schools! On May 3 we saluted our nutrition workers on School Lunch Hero Day to kick off School Nutrition Employee Week (May 6-10)!
Getting supper on the table at home can be a challenge sometimes, but GCPS’ 1500+ School Nutrition Program (SNP) staff members prepare tasty and healthy meals— twice each school day— for our students and staff, follow strict nutrition guidelines, and keep an eye on student food allergies. All that, and they serve our students and staff with a smile!
A few statistics from the 2017-18 school year put this superhero feat into perspective… Café Gwinnett served more than 20.4 million lunches and more than 10 million breakfasts, including 15 million servings of local produce through our award-winning farm-to-school program. (Check out these SNP recipes you can make at home with fresh, local produce.)
Our school cafeterias serve many of the same brands that families use at home, including Tyson, General Mills, Kellogg’s, Land O’ Lakes, and many more. Appealing and innovative options as well as nutrition education are helping our students make healthy food choices and explore a variety of foods. And those meals are fueling growing bodies and brains so kids can learn!
