Our schools, students, and staff benefit from the generous support of many business partners, agencies, and charitable organizations. Earlier this school year, Walton EMC awarded more than $142,000 in EmPOWERment Grants to fund innovative projects at 22 GCPS schools. Here’s how one school is using this community support for student learning.
Arcado ES students are exploring their world through award-winning Scholastic News magazines. A $5,895 grant funded a magazine subscription for every student at the school for the rest of this school year and will help fund subscriptions next year.
Each week, students receive the non-fiction print and digital texts that feature current events and topics in an engaging format that includes entertaining graphics, activities, and games. Designed for readers at each grade level, the magazine articles in Scholastic News help build students’ literacy skills and background knowledge.
“We believe in our students' potential to become their generation's next great leaders,” says ESOL Teacher Jamie Garcia who applied for the grant. “By giving each student access to a high-quality and engaging non-fiction text each week, we will foster a community of readers who are knowledgeable in the happenings of the world around them, thus preparing them to become the leaders of tomorrow.”
