Schools honor local Teachers of the Year for 2019-20
The first step of Gwinnett County Public Schools’ search for the district’s 2019-20 Teacher of the Year (TOTY) is complete and 139 local school Teachers of the Year have been designated as tops in their schools!
Parent Mentors invite families to learn about options after high school for students with special needs
Parents of students receiving special education services in Gwinnett are invited to attend an upcoming session in the “Gwinnett County Parent Mentors Present” series. This special session will be held on Wednesday, September 18, from 10 a.m. to noon at OneStop Centerville, located at 3025 Bethany Church Road in Snellville.
Stacy Poteat, a coordinator in GCPS' Special Education Department, will present “Life Beyond the High School Diploma.” The session is designed for parents of students in middle and high school, and Spanish interpretation services will be available. Topics will include barriers to college success for students with special needs, differences between K-12 education and a college setting, types of accommodations available to college students, employment and disabilities, barriers to employment success, and college programs for students with intellectual disabilities.
This learning series— presented throughout the school year— is designed for families of children with disabilities, and presented by the Gwinnett County Parent Mentors Dawn Albanese and Jackie McNair in collaboration with Special Education Department staff and community leaders and organizations.
Parent Mentors are parents who work within GCPS' special education department, providing information and support to other families who have children served in special education. Ms. Albanese and Ms. McNair have first-hand knowledge of raising a child with special needs as they both have a child who has been served or is being served in GCPS’ Special Education programs.

Deadline approaches to share feedback on state standards for math, language arts
A reminder… the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) is asking for feedback on the Georgia Standards of Excellence for Mathematics and English Language Arts. The GaDOE hopes to receive feedback from all stakeholders, including educators, parents, students, and representatives from business and industry and higher education. The survey is available through Friday, Sept. 6, until 5 p.m. Online, find a brief survey on Mathematics standards and on English Language Arts standards.

Parent Mentors offer sessions for families of students with special needs
Parents of students receiving special education services in Gwinnett are invited to attend an upcoming informational session, part of the “Gwinnett County Parent Mentors Present” series. On Wednesday, Aug. 28, Gwinnett County Parent Mentors Dawn Albanese and Jackie McNair will present “Starting the New School Year on a Positive Note.” The session will cover a number of topics, including communicating with teachers, supporting your child at home to improve education outcomes, helping your child with homework strategies, establishing daily routines, and organizing documents.
