GREAT NEWS!  Get Georgia Reading, the statewide reading initiative, worked overtime to get FREE access to myON Digital Library online! Families have access to more than 6,400 online books and age-appropriate news articles! Kids can search more than 50 different categories and genres, fiction and non-fiction, picture books, graphic novels, chapter books, titles for struggling and reluctant readers, and Spanish and bilingual titles. It’s like having your own personal library right at your fingertips!

2020-21 registration continues for CTE programs

Registration continues for the Grayson HS Technical Education Program and Maxwell HS of Technology— two specialized career and technical education programs for GCPS high school students interested in exploring careers through hands-on learning. Online, find registration and program information for Grayson and registration and information about Maxwell programs for the 2020-21 school year. Eligible students may register for either program from their Student Portal account from anywhere they have internet access.

GCPS offers Transition Fair for students with disabilities, families, and educators

On March 14, Discovery HS will host GCPS’ 2020 Transition Fair for students with disabilities, their families, and educators. Set for 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the event will provide information about community services and resources for young people who have disabilities and may need assistance as they transition to adulthood. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with local agency representatives regarding various options available for school-aged students as well as transitional services to post-school activities and employment. Breakout sessions will cover topics including day programs, community living supports, vocational and career services, transition resources, and recreation and leisure opportunities. Parent Mentors offer session on summer plans for families of children with special needs

Parents of students receiving special education services in Gwinnett are invited to attend an upcoming informational session on Tuesday, March 10, part of the Gwinnett County Parent Mentors Present” series. Gwinnett County Parent Mentors Dawn Albanese and Jackie McNair will present “Enjoy an Engaging Summer Break.”

This monthly learning series is designed for families of children with disabilities, and presented by the district’s Parent Mentors in collaboration with GCPS’ Special Education Department staff and community leaders and organizations. Typically, the sessions are held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in Building 200 at the J. Alvin Wilbanks Instructional Support Center (ISC), located at 437 Old Peachtree Road, NW, in Suwanee.

Parent Mentors are parents who work within GCPS' special education department, providing information and support to other families who have children served in special education. The mentors have first-hand knowledge of raising a child with special needs as they both have a child who has been served or is being served in GCPS.

Register for Online Campus for 2020-21 by Feb. 28 deadline

Students interested in participating in the full-time program at Gwinnett Online Campus (GOC) next school year have just a few more days to register before the Feb. 28 registration deadline. Registration for students in grades 4-12 is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The registration process is not complete until all required documents are presented to the school office. The school registrar is available Monday-Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Once a grade level is full, a waiting list will be established. GOC does not offer mid-year enrollment. An informational meeting is set for Feb. 26, 6:30–7:30 p.m.

Parent Mentors invite families of students with special needs to learn about ‘Katie Beckett’ Medicaid eligibility in evening session

Parents of students receiving special education services in Gwinnett are invited to attend an upcoming evening session in the “Gwinnett County Parent Mentors Present” series. Miriam Turner of Right from the Start Medical Assistance Group in the Centralized Katie Beckett Unit will present "Katie Beckett Medicaid 101 - The Application and Eligibility Process." Katie Beckett is an eligibility category that allows certain children under age 17 who have long-term disabilities or complex medical needs and live at home, to become eligible for Medicaid coverage. This evening session will be held on Wednesday, March 4, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at OneStop Centerville, located at 3025 Bethany Church Road in Snellville. Spanish interpretation services will be available for this session.
