The Georgia Department of Education recently released the list of AP Honors Schools and 23 GCPS high schools made one or more of the lists. Several schools were recognized in more than one category. Mountain View High made the list in six of the seven categories in which it is eligible while Archer High, Brookwood High, Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology, Mill Creek High, North Gwinnett High, Parkview High, and Peachtree Ridge High schools made the list in five of the seven categories in which they are eligible.
AP exams are administered by the College Board, which also administers the SAT. AP courses are one of several ways Georgia students can access college-level learning at the high school level. Students who earn a 3, 4, or 5 on an AP exam may receive college credit.
Dr. Clay Hunter, associate superintendent for Curriculum and Instructional Support, point out that research shows one of strongest predictors of student success in college is taking AP courses and scoring at least at 2 out of 5 on the exam. “With this in mind, our students, parents, teachers, and administrators have established a tradition of focusing on access to Advanced Placement courses for students across all demographic groups,” he says. He commends the commitment of our teachers and the efforts of AP students who worked so hard to meet the rigorous standards established by College Board.

About AP in GCPS…
Advanced Placement (AP) courses are challenging, college-level classes taught by specially trained high school teachers. AP coursework is demanding and the classes are writing-intensive and rigorous. Among the AP courses offered in Gwinnett County high schools are English Literature and Composition, English Language and Composition, European History, World History, U.S. History, Comparative Government, U.S. Government, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Psychology, Human Geography, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics B, Physics C, Environmental Science, Spanish, French, German, Latin, Computer Science, Music Theory, Art History, Studio Drawing Portfolio, 2-D Design Portfolio, 3-D Design Portfolio, AP Seminar, and AP Research. (Each GCPS high school offers AP courses based on student interest and staffing considerations.)
Optional subject-specific AP exams are given at the end of the school year. Many colleges award credit for passing the exams (with a score of 3 or higher out of 5) or allow a student to be exempt from certain college courses.
