Deadline nears for feedback on proposed resources
The community has an opportunity to review and give feedback on proposed curriculum resources for Language Arts and Social Studies for select grades and courses. The public review of the proposed print and digital resources is scheduled through Oct. 4 at the district’s Instructional Support Center in Suwanee.
Annual AKS review runs through Oct. 15
The AKS spell out the essential concepts students are expected to know and skills they should acquire in a given grade, subject, or course.

Help connect students to their futures
To better prepare our students for a smooth transition from school to college and career, the district hosts the annual Career Connections event to promote career awareness. This year’s event is set for Oct. 22. More than 5,000 9th grade students from the district’s seven College and Career Academy high schools will learn about career fields through “show and tell” interviews and activities with community members from across the career spectrum. Prospective exhibitors can find more information about the event and a sign-up form on the Academy web page. There’s no cost for exhibitors to participate in the event. Sept. 24 is National Voter Registration Day
On Tuesday, Sept. 24— National Voter Registration Day— volunteers and organizations from all over the country will “hit the streets” to raise awareness of voter registration opportunities.

RSVP for McClure Health Science HS dedication
On Sunday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m., Gwinnett County Public Schools will hold the official dedication ceremony of its newest theme school, McClure Health Science HS, and you’re invited! A reception and tour will follow the ceremony. Please RSVP by email or by calling 770-806-7946.
The new school is named after Dr. Robert McClure, a former Gwinnett County Board of Education member and local physician. At this unique school, students learn a rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum through the lens of health science, combining coursework with practical experiences in myriad Health Science fields. Program areas include Patient Care, Allied Health, Health Informatics, and Advanced Medicine. The school’s four-year program begins with seminar courses and culminates with capstone projects and internships. McClure Health Science HS is located at 3921 Club Drive in Duluth.

The Teach On Project (previously Atlanta Families' Awards for Excellence in Education) is looking for nominations of outstanding teachers and school leaders for the 2020 Teach On Project Awards! The deadline to nominate is Sept. 30. (You will be asked to create an account in order to make a nomination.)
Each award winner receives $7,500— $3,500 in funding for a school project, $1,500 in funding for professional development, and a personal stipend of $2,500. Nominees must be teachers or school-based administrators with at least two years of experience in GCPS, including the 2018-19 school year. The organization is looking for educators who have had a positive impact on students’ self-esteem and their academic achievement and who collaborate with their community to support students.
Parent Mentors share advice for families of students with special needs
Parents of students receiving special education services in Gwinnett are invited to attend an upcoming informational session on Tuesday, Sept. 24, part of the Gwinnett County Parent Mentors Present” series. Tom Owen, GCPS director of Psychological Services, will present “ADHD: Strategies for Supporting Students at Home and School” Spanish interpretation services will be available.
This monthly learning series is designed for families of children with disabilities, and presented by Gwinnett County Parent Mentors Dawn Albanese and Jackie McNair in collaboration with GCPS' Special Education Department staff and community leaders and organizations. The session is scheduled for 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the Central Gwinnett Room (Room 2.111) in Building 200 at the J. Alvin Wilbanks Instructional Support Center (ISC), located at 437 Old Peachtree Road, NW, in Suwanee.
Parent Mentors are parents who work within GCPS' special education department, providing information and support to other families who have children served in special education. The mentors have first-hand knowledge of raising a child with special needs as they both have a child who has been served or is being served in GCPS.
